Honey, meet my Baby Mama and the Man who's gonna knock me up...

Sounds like an episode of Jerry Springer, huh?

Nope!! Just my life as a surrogate...

It's actually the day we've all been waiting for - TRANSFER DAY! Got the call last night with my instructions then proceeded to scream and do a twirl in the kitchen.

"We're gonna have a baby!", I yelped.

All night I felt light cramping in my stomach. Not sure if it was my uterus getting some practice or nerves.

Got the kids off to school this morning without a hitch. Then proceeded to follow the nurse's instructions. Make sure my bladder was empty at 930a, then drink 32 - 48 oz of water to ensure it will be full for the procedure at 10a. I've been working on getting that "late demon" off my back, so I made sure to arrive at the doctor's office early. Immediately, I drank 3 cups of water and Pubs made me a cup of tea. Melissa was running late (for once, it wasn't the black girl! lol!), but we told her to take her time. We'd certainly wait. Knowing how important this is, we didn't want her freaking out or driving dangerously.

When she arrived, she gave me a big hug and handed me this goodie bag full of treats for my day of rest!!

  • A gift certificate for pizza - so I don't have to cook

  • A gift certificate for a movie and popcorn - to keep the kids entertained

  • The Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell - for me to read

  • My favorite snacks including CHOCOLATE :-)

  • Lastly, 2 pregnancy tests for the big day!

I love this lady!! She thought of everything!

Melissa and Pubs have heard so much about each other, I'm sure they feel like they've already met. This just makes it official.

By the time they call us back, my bladder is about to burst. I don't want to talk. I don't want to participate in pleasantries. I don't want waste time. I'm ready to get these babies in here so I can go! Despite being uncomfortable, Melissa, Pubs, and I are full of excitement and keep the coy, little nurse laughing. Blushing, even, at our candor.

Enter Dr. Toledo with his usual jovial attitude along with an embryologist. "Are we ready to do this?!?"

"Now let's see...you've got your baby mama. Your husband. and the man who's gonna knock you up all in the same room!!"

We all erupt with laughter.

"Don't make me laugh I have to use the bathroom!" I chide.

After an introduction and handshake, Dr. Toledo begins to chit chat and answer questions.

Oh no! Come on. Come on. Come on.

"Is she always this aggressive when it's time to get it on?"

DR. TOLEDO!

"Ok. Ok. Here we go."

The embryologist carefully presents him with the two little guys to be placed. Their first of many pictures flashed on the strategically placed viewing screens in the room. One is already bursting out of his yolk sac rearing to go! We affectionately named him Julio, after Falcons' wide receiver, Julio Jones.

The nurse confirms that my uterus is A-OK. The Dr's words: It's perfect. The embryos, looking like no more than 2 tiny dots on the ultrasound, were placed in their cushiony new home via catheter to their own paparazzi taking pictures and video (Melissa and Pubs). Uneventful yet life changing.

Now the waiting game begins. I'm set to return in 2 weeks on Christmas Eve for a blood test to confirm the pregnancy. You already know I'm not waiting that long. That's what the tests in that goodie bag are for!

Apparantly, Melissa isn't waiting either. I'm instructed to wait 5 minutes before rising, and she's already talking about "if this doesn't work" and "how soon can we transfer again". Dr. Toledo lovingly but firmly advises Melissa to calm down.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Let's see how this goes first before we start talking about the next transfer!"

I continue to reassure her because I have enough faith for the both of us. Just call me Fertile Myrtle. My uterus is ready. Lined perfectly. and Julio is ready to settle in! Doc kisses my hand and compliments me on a job well done. I blush and try not to laugh at all the shenanigans going on in the room as he walks out. Very difficult with this rowdy cast of characters. There's love all in the room. Just a taste of the love this baby/babies will receive when they arrive.
